Most callbacks like this come down to one thing: training that didn’t keep up with the code. And in 2026, the code changed. The 2025 California Plumbing Code, based on the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code, took effect statewide on January 1, 2026, replacing the 2022 edition.

What’s new for 2026: The California Building Standards Code updates every three years. The 2025 edition, including the plumbing code, applies to projects submitted on or after January 1, 2026. Cities like San Diego adopt the state code and may add their own local amendments, so always check with your local building department. 7 Types of Plumbing Training & Plumbing Courses That Deliver Results
1. Pre-Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship Programs
Formal programs combine classroom learning with real field work. They’re the foundation for anyone entering the trade.

Time investment: A few weeks for a pre-apprenticeship. About four years for a full apprenticeship.
2. Manufacturer-Led Training Programs
Major manufacturers like Kohler, American Standard, and Rheem offer product-specific training. These sessions cover installation, energy efficiency, and water conservation for the products you install every day.
Time investment: Usually 1 to 3 days.
3. Online Courses and Webinars
Self-paced modules from groups like the PHCC Educational Foundation and the International Code Council (ICC) let you learn on your own schedule. They’re a good way to brush up on a single topic between jobs.
Time investment: Typically 1 to 4 hours per module.
4. Professional Association Events and Workshops
Associations like PHCC host half-day and full-day events focused on regulatory updates, best practices, and networking. You learn what’s changing and meet the people dealing with the same changes.
Time investment: Half a day to a full day.
5. Continuing Education Programs
California’s Contractors State License Board (CSLB) doesn’t currently require continuing education hours to renew most contractor licenses, including the C-36 plumbing license. Even so, ongoing training is one of the best ways to avoid code violations. Certain certifications also have their own renewal rules. For example, an EPA lead-safe renovator certificate lasts 5 years before you have to renew it.
Tip: Rules can change, so confirm current requirements with the CSLB and any agency that issues your certifications.
6. Code Update Seminars
When a new code edition takes effect, update seminars walk you through what changed and how it affects your work in the field. With the 2025 California Plumbing Code now in effect, 2026 is the year to take one.
Time investment: 4 to 8 hours. The code updates every three years.
7. Hands-On Certification Courses
Hands-on courses let you practice on real equipment and earn certifications that open up new work. In San Diego, three stand out:
